It is campaign season, which means conservatives will try to paint Democrats as liberals, as if it were a dirty word. I, for one, am proud to be a liberal and believe we should stand up against these conservative smears.

The author uses two very powerful underpinning principles as the core values to being a liberal. In particular, liberty and truth are the key ingredients to making a true liberal. Many Democrats have cast aside the urge to seek the truth when they turned their backs on the Constitution and failed to inquire about many details of the Bush White House. Many Republicans are key defenders of liberty. For example, some have crossed the aisle in support of gay marriage rights. Neither party has a stranglehold on the values which represent liberalism. However, the conservatives look upon gay rights as a threat to liberty. That idea could not be further from the truth. Gay rights, as the author claims, is a sign of peace and prosperity. Suppression of rights is not liberty, rather it is the direct opposite, namely, tyranny.

Want to get someone really mentally puzzled? Ask him/her what makes a "conservative" and what makes a "liberal". Leave out the specific positions - e.g. "They like the Iraq war and we don't'" and "They're climate change skeptics and we believe". Get down to the real root attitudes. Makes for an interesting session. Also, at the end someone may know himself/herself better; and possibly realize that he/she has more in common with the "other guys" than ever before realized. This knowledge can't be bad.
